What is Coronavirus?

Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). A novel coronavirus (nCoV) is a new strain that has not been previously identified in humans.

Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals and people.  Detailed investigations found that SARS-CoV was transmitted from civet cats to humans and MERS-CoV from dromedary camels to humans. Several known coronaviruses are circulating in animals that have not yet infected humans. "Source: WHO"

In general terms Coronavirus is a recent outbreak in Wuhan China with 370 people dead and 17,000+ infected in China [As per February 4, 2019]. The virus has spread across the globe to many countries with one confirmed death in the Philippines, first out of China. Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, the infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure, and even death. Now, the main question is how can we protect ourselves from Coronavirus?

How to protect yourself from Coronavirus?

As the saying goes "Prevention is better than cure". We must know and protect ourselves against coronavirus and unfortunately, so far, there is no cure for this virus and hence the only option left is prevention. According to WHO, you must practice the following precautions:

  • Frequently clean hands by using alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water
  • Avoid going out to crowded places and always wear face masks.
  • Whenever you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose with tissues, throw away tissue and wash your hands immediately afterward.
  • Avoid contact with anyone who has a fever or a cough.
  • Avoid direct unprotected contact with live animals, especially while visiting wet markets.
  • Consumption of raw or undercooked animal products must be avoided or at least must be handled with care.

Coronavirus can be treated?

So far there is no known treatment for Coronavirus, the only way is to deal with symptoms using some medications for fever and coughing. A few days back Thailand announced that they figure out a cocktail that could help to deal with Coronavirus but it's not been officially confirmed so far. The only option we are left with is prevention. So, take care of yourself and your loved ones around you.
